Dragon Fly

Dragon Fly. On the day this photo was taken, the beach at Sanibel Island (Florida) was very stormy and the strong winds had cleared the beach of wildlife. But while trudging back to our rental condo I noticed some dragon flies struggling to hold their flight positions in the strong wind amongst the dunes. The challenge was to capture the image using a 400 mm telephoto lens.....

Red Fox

Here's our local Red Fox, captured next to the little creek that runs past our house. The fox is very shy and this shot was captured at 2am using a remote trigger system and a few small strobes hidden in the trees. If you look closely at the image you’ll see the fur on the tail has a small tuft sticking out to one side. It turned out this was the start of mange, a serious infection by parasitic mites which is usually fatal in foxes. Luckily, this photograph alerted us to his plight and we were able to successfully treat his condition using a few baited treats containing small doses of Ivermectin, administered over the course of a few weeks. Our trail-cam confirmed the little guy had taken the medication.

Raccoon with Stinky Dinner.

Heavy rains produced a few sad casualties in our little creek. After the flood levels subsided, the carcass of a young Skunk lay on the creek side. Alerted by the smell, and curious to see how nature would deal with this, I set up a camera and strobes for a night shot. It seems our local masked bandits will eat anything! The Raccoon left happily with his new found meal, the Skunk’s life wasn’t wasted, and the odor vanished into the night.
